Project Results

According to the project objectives the development of thermochemical storage systems with two different material systems, manganese oxide and calcium hydroxide, has been investigated. For both reaction systems the following specific targets have been achieved wihtin the course of the project:

  • Characterization of thermo-physical properties, thermodynamic equilibrium and reaction kinetics
  • Development of improved materials
  • Development and validation of simulation tools
  • Development and operation of novel reactor concepts in lab and pilot scale
  • Techno economic analysis of the potential of thermochemical storage systems for next generation CSP plants

One of the main results of the project was the development and comissioning of two novel storage reactors:

100 kWh pilot plant for a calcium hydroxide storage system

The pilot plant is operated at DLR in Cologne and has been designed with the following capabilities:

  • Novel moving bed concept with detachment of power and capacity
  • Reactor with 10 kW thermal power
  • 250 kg (100kWh) of hydroxide material stored in containers
  • Temperatures up to 550°C
  • Adjustable reaction gas atmosphere from 100 mbar to 2 bar steam

Lab-scale reactor for manganese oxide storage system

The test bench is operated at IMDEA in Madrid and has the following capabilities:

  • Operation in fixed or fluidized bed mode
  • Capacity for 2kg of manganese oxide material
  • Adjustable air flow at temperatures up to 1000°C
  • Measurement of oxygen content in the fluidization gas
